In 2019, Glasgow Life initiated a city wide artist residency programme placing an artist in every ward of the city in a project divided into three phases. Mandy McIntosh is resident in Ward 17, Springburn and Robroyston, where she is from. For phase one she worked in partnership with the Springburn Winter Gardens Trust and made an exhibition of work by local people generated in workshops and installed in the community hub within Springburn Shopping Centre. This exhibition included replicas of sandstone architectural sculptures salvaged from the Springburn Public Hall building which was controversially demolished in 2012. The sandstone women were scanned using photogrammetry techniques and CNC milled from the data and they provide a central motif within the residency. Mandy is focussing on the scuptures which are already in Springburn as a basis for conversations and creative input with local people to understand the civic processes and make subsequent spaces for more democratic approaches to permanent artefacts in the civic realm.
